Worlds that seem to come out of dreams and mysterious characters that only appear in the imagination were the elements that captivated my attention when I first saw Datzel's work.

He is not only a very talented artist but someone who has managed to open his way very fast in the world of crypto-art. His works are an invitation to exploration, contemplation, and to look for the little details in them. It's also inevitable to connect them to our own experiences and life situations. It is no surprise that he has a fan base and loyal collectors looking forward to grabbing the new pieces as soon as they are in the market.

Hi Datzel, Could you tell us a little about yourself and what do you do?

Well, first I'd like to say that my real name is David Muñoz Guzmán. I am Mexican and live in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco. I am currently a graphic design student and work in an advertising agency at the same time. I make illustrations in Photoshop based on photomontage and applying both theoretical and practical knowledge in my free time.

How was your first approach to design and graphic arts? Any story you would like to share?

Long before I started studying design, I saw illustrations on Instagram and websites like Devian Art. I always had the illusion of creating works with that quality and technique, so when I started studying, I decided to use Photoshop and Illustrator.

Obviously, Photoshop is the tool that I master the most. My learning process was exclusively self-taught, watching videos of other artists (not tutorials, but their creative process) and basically imitating what they did. I learned to create my own illustrations and, over time, to solidify my aesthetics.

You define your own artistic work as "Conceptual Art." Could you tell us about this concept and how your inspiration and interests were focused in this area?

I consider myself a conceptual artist because each element in my compositions represents and communicates something, but I never do it literally. Usually, my creations are weird and may seem like they don't make sense, but objects always have a meaning.

I focus on this area because I feel the freedom to express whatever it is and whatever it is without pigeonholing myself in some objective or goal. The final product always tends to be something that you did not expect. From there, a subjective interpretation is born.

It is indisputable that you have a fascination for the surreal, mystical, and mysterious in your recent work. Is this really so? Where does this inspiration come from?

Yeah right! I have always liked taking things beyond "normal" because sometimes "normal" tends to be boring or doesn't attract much attention. Obviously, we would first see a person who has three eyes before one who has two. That totally breaks with how linear life can sometimes be.

You have recently ventured into the art world in NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) with a very positive response to your work. What was your first approach to this "crypto-world," and how did you decide to be an active member of this artistic community?

I started in the crypto world thanks to my brother. This happened in October 2020 through an NFTs project called Lukso. At first, I didn't know what this was until I did my research, and it seemed like the beginning of a new digitized reality.

It was interesting to see that the "boom" of NFTs exploded in early 2021. I then did more research and decided to "tokenize" my first piece on Atomic Hub. Like what happened in other markets, it did not have the crypto-currencies used in that platform and could not put pieces for sale. Later I discovered Open Sea. I took a chance by investing a hundred dollars. From there, I started uploading three NFTs per week. It was two months later when I sold my first work.

The truth was I had some skepticism because, like many, I entered by pure speculation. Then I started experimenting with other markets, and I think the rest is history ...

As I have already mentioned, the response to your "crypto-art" has been very positive. Has this also been your perception as an artist? How has your experience in this adventure been so far?

Obviously, this was the case, both in my perception as an artist and as a human being in particular. Beyond crypto-art, it is the blockchain that allows us to generate value through our effort and our work. It totally breaks with the Status Quo. Artists and designers would never have imagined this. We are recovering the dignity agencies and companies (not all but most of them) have taken from us since our work has consistently been underestimated. The worst of all is that most of the profit goes to third parties, which is finally over.

Of course, there are many more things we would like to know about you and your work. Anything else you would like to share?

I would like to share that I have quite a few plans for the future, especially in my works in particular. I will have plenty of time to learn new tools and software, which will allow me to improve my work.

I would like to say to the entire community of artists and designers not to be overwhelmed by this new technology. Research it and not be carried away by the comments of people who simply divulge information they hear without knowing in-depth about the subject. They don't really see the potential that blockchain has and how it will set the tone for a totally different future.

I'd also like to say to those already involved in this and who do not have sales or do not grow in the community. Try to connect with people who know more about the subject, people who can help you grow, and also try to learn new tools and techniques on your own. This does not assure success, but there will be some change for the better.

I want to say something to those who have sales and are growing within the community too. Do not betray those who have promoted you. Stay away from meritocracy and individualism. Do not be like those who take all the credit. As long as you have the opportunity to buy from other artists, do so. I assure you that it will multiply in the future.

DATZEL – Descubriendo y creando mundos misteriosos

Mundos que solo aparecen en sueños y misteriosos personajes que aparecen en la imaginación. Esos fueron los elementos que me cautivaron cuando vi por primera vez la obra de Datzel.

No solamente se trata de un artista muy talentoso, sino de alguien que ha sabido abrirse un rápido camino en el mundo del crypto-arte. Sus obras te invitan a la exploración, a contemplarles y a correlacionar los detalles en ellas, así como conectarlos con nuestras propias experiencias y vivencias. No es sorpresa que en tan corto tiempo tenga una base de fans y fieles coleccionistas atentos al lanzamiento de su próxima obra.

Hola Datzel, ¿Podrías contarnos un poco acerca de ti y a qué te dedicas?

Pues primero decir que mi nombre real es David Muñoz Guzmán. Soy mexicano y radico en la ciudad de Guadalajara, Jalisco. Actualmente soy estudiante de diseño gráfico y trabajo en una agencia de publicidad. En mis tiempos libres hago ilustraciones en Photoshop basadas en fotomontaje y aplicando conocimientos tanto teóricos y prácticos.

¿Cómo fue tu primer acercamiento al diseño y a las artes gráficas? ¿Alguna historia que te gustaría compartir?

Mucho antes de comenzar a estudiar diseño, veía ilustraciones en Instagram y sitios web como Devian Art. Siempre tuve la ilusión de lograr crear obras con esa calidad y técnica, entonces, cuando entré a la carrera, decidí aprender por mi cuenta a manejar Photoshop e Illustrator.

Evidentemente Photoshop es la herramienta que más domino. Mi proceso de aprendizaje fue exclusivamente autodidacta, viendo videos de otros artistas (no tutoriales, sino su proceso creativo) y básicamente imitando lo que ellos hacían. Pude aprender a crear mis propias ilustraciones y con el paso del tiempo, a solidificar mi estética.

Tú mismo defines a tu trabajo artístico como “Arte Conceptual.” ¿Podrías hablarnos un poco de este concepto y de cómo es que tu inspiración e intereses se enfocaron en esta área?

Me considero artista conceptual debido a que cada elemento puesto en escena representa y comunica algo, pero nunca lo hago de manera literal. Usualmente mis creaciones son raras y pareciera que no tienen sentido, pero los objetos siempre tienen algún significado.

Me enfoque en esta área porque siento la libertad de expresar lo que sea y como sea, sin encasillarme en algún objetivo o meta. El producto final siempre tiende a ser algo que no esperaba y de ahí nace una interpretación subjetiva.

En tu trabajo reciente es indiscutible que tienes una fascinación por lo surrealista, místico y misterioso. ¿Es esto realmente así? ¿De dónde viene esta inspiración?

¡Sí, claro! Siempre me ha gustado llevar las cosas más allá de lo “normal” porque a veces lo “normal” tiende a ser aburrido o no llama tanto la atención. Evidentemente veríamos primero a una persona que tiene tres ojos antes que a una que tiene dos. Eso rompe totalmente con lo lineal que a veces puede ser la vida.

Recientemente has incursionado en el mundo del arte en NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) con una respuesta muy positiva hacia tu trabajo. ¿Cuál fue tu primer acercamiento a este mundo “crypto” y cómo tomaste la decisión de ser un miembro activo de esta comunidad artística?

Yo empecé en el mundo crypto gracias a mi hermano. Esto sucedió en Octubre del 2020 a través de un proyecto de NFTs llamado Lukso. Al principio no sabía qué era esto hasta que investigué y me pareció el comienzo de una nueva realidad digitalizada.

Curiosamente el “boom” de los NFTs estalló a principios del 2021. Fue entonces cuando investigué aun más y decidí “tokenizar” mi primera pieza en Atomic Hub. Tal y como sucedió en otros mercados, no tenía las crypto-monedas empleadas en esa plataforma y por lo tanto no podía poner piezas a la venta. Mas adelante descubrí Open Sea. Me arriesgué pagando cien dólares. A partir de ahí comencé a subir tres NFTs por semana. Fue dos meses después cuando vendí mi primera obra.

La verdad tenía algo de escepticismo pues, como muchos, entré por pura especulación. Después empecé a experimentar con otros mercados y creo que lo demás es historia…

Cómo ya lo he mencionado, la respuesta a tu “crypto-arte” ha sido muy positiva. ¿Ha sido ésta también tu percepción como artista? ¿Cómo ha sido hasta ahora tu experiencia en esta aventura?

Evidentemente ha sido así, tanto en mi percepción como artista y como ser humano en particular. Más allá del crypto-arte, es el blockchain lo que permite generar valor a través de nuestro esfuerzo y nuestro trabajo. Rompe totalmente con el Status Quo. Los artistas y diseñadores nunca nos habríamos imaginado esto. Estamos realmente recuperando la dignidad que las agencias o empresas (no todas pero sí la mayoría) nos han quitado ya que nuestro trabajo siempre ha sido subestimado. Lo peor de todo es que la mayor parte de la ganancia se lo quedan terceros y eso finalmente se acabó.

Por supuesto que hay muchas más cosas que nos gustaría saber sobre ti y tu trabajo. ¿Alguna cosa más que quisieras compartir?

Pues me gustaría compartir que tengo bastantes planes a futuro, sobre todo en mis obras en particular. Tendré bastante tiempo para aprender nuevas herramientas y nuevos programas que me permitan mejorar mi trabajo.

También quisiera expresarle a toda la comunidad de artistas y diseñadores que no se sientan abrumados por esta nueva tecnología. Investiguen sobre ella y no se dejen llevar por los comentarios de gente que simplemente divulga lo que escucho sin conocer a profundidad sobre el tema. Realmente no saben el potencial que tiene el blockchain y cómo marcará las pautas para un futuro totalmente diferente.

Para aquellos artistas que ya están involucrados en esto y que no tienen ventas o no crecen en la comunidad. Traten de relacionarse con gente que sabe más sobre el tema, gente que los pueda ayudar a crecer y también traten de aprender nuevas herramientas y técnicas por cuenta propia. Esto no asegura nada pero evidentemente habrá algún cambio para bien.

Para los que tienen ventas y están creciendo dentro de la comunidad. No traicionen a quienes los han impulsado, abandonen la meritocracia y el individualismo, no sean como aquellos que se atribuyen todo el mérito. Mientras tengas la oportunidad de comprarle a otros artistas, hazlo. Te aseguro que se te multiplicará en el futuro.
