Imagine looking at your Instagram feed and suddenly finding yourself in the middle of a pitched battle between two gladiators who give it all to win the fight. This is what happened to me one day, and that's precisely how I discovered Illustration Fight Club. Contrary to what one might think, this project aims to generate community through a shared passion. Drawing!

Enjoy the battle, but be careful because you will have to decide which side you are on at some point. And the decision will always be challenging to make because the talent of the gladiators who participate is superlative. However, despite everything that may be in someone's favor, only one can be the champion. And this is when you enter the game because the decision is made by you, the spectator. Your voice counts in every elimination and can lead the bravest to both glory and defeat. They will have to put their talent to the test each round and give everything to reach victory.

There are rules in any battle, but roughly it works something like this: a group of 16 talented illustrators is selected. They will face off one by one in a round, illustrating a pre-established theme. After agile movements with the hands and acrobatically mastering the pencil, each one presents their final illustration to the public. It has the jury's function giving their vote and, finally, awarding the victory to only one participant. The tie continues like this with each of the pairs until reaching the final. Here the overall winner is finally crowned.

Suppose you think you are brave enough and have it all. In that case, you can apply yourself to participate in the battle and have the opportunity to fight for victory.

It is important to note that great warriors are behind this project: Caro Zanoria and Gabo Mr. Lemonade. Keeping the platform alive is where the most significant battle is. The idea itself is not just genius. It's a great way to summon the community to do something together beyond active participation within fighting and the great value that the viewer adds to the project.

I have contacted the IFC team to ask them some questions that intrigued me to write about them. However, the responses highlighted the authentic passion and love for IFC, which can be read between the lines. So I have decided to leave the interview format to make you feel this passion too, and the fact that the contribution has been precious, and it would be a shame to leave something out.

How did the idea for Illustration Fight Club come about?

The IFC idea is not my (Caro) or Gabo's original idea. The concept was created by Add from Colectivo Tecolote a couple of years ago. He made sporadic battles live in Mexico City and also through Instagram with more recognized illustrators. On one occasion, fought Mr. Lemonade (Gabo) VS Jony Tentaculos through networks and live in Mexico City: Mr. Lemonade VS Chocotoy. It was precisely on that visit that we spoke with Add and told him about everything he could do with the project. Because of a lot of work, Add gave us his project to shape it and put it in motion once more.

That's when we worked on the concept, invited the illustrators, and organized everything ...

What is the mission of Illustration Fight Club?

First, illustrators, professionals, or not can show their work since we believe that there is a lot of talent, and much of it is not yet known.

Through our main battles, we encourage other people to participate with the same battle theme. This is how they show their work, and we put together a larger community with spaces for more people.

Without a doubt, it is a project that is having an impact within the Spanish-speaking creative community. What has been the experience regarding the response of this community so far? In your opinion, what has been the project's most significant contribution?

Well, the response was, by far, better than expected. When we started the project that was broadcast entirely through Instagram, IFC only had four hundred followers. Now we add more than seven thousand five hundred and counting!

We have not invested a single dollar in the project, and we made absolutely no money at all, only more friends. We loved that the sixteen leading illustrators accepted without knowing about the project and getting something in return. It was also lovely seeing more people being interested and many of them being encouraged to participate.

Thanks to some illustrators' feedback (either the sixteen participants and some from the public), several people have obtained additional jobs. They have been published on interview sites to show their work, and we are delighted to see them.

How can the creative community help Illustration Fight Club to keep going?

For now, this first stage has not been completed, although we already have the winners. Due to the contingency, we had to cancel the final, which would take place to live in CDMX. Everyone's meeting is still pending. Everyone is invited when we have a date, and there we will deliver their awards since there were sponsors who joined the project, which also makes us happy.

While that happens, we will eventually be doing some dynamics on Instagram. So stay tuned! And then the second edition is coming. Follow the bill and check the site!

ILLUSTRATION FIGHT CLUB – ¡Afila tu lápiz, pues la batalla apenas comienza!

Imagina estar mirando tu Instagram y de repente encontrarte en medio de una batalla campal entre dos gladiadores que lo dan todo por ganar la pelea. Esto es lo que me sucedió a mí un día y fue exactamente así como descubrí a Illustration Fight Club. Un proyecto que, contrario a lo que se podría pensar, tiene como misión generar comunidad a través de una pasión común. ¡Dibujar!

Disfruta la batalla, pero ten cuidado, porque en algún momento tendrás que decidir de qué lado estás. Y la decisión será siempre difícil de tomar, pues el talento de los gladiadores que participan es superlativo. Sin embargo, y a pesar de todo lo que pueda estar a su favor, solo uno puede ser el campeón. Y es aquí cuando entras en el juego, pues la decisión la haces tú. Tu voz cuenta en cada eliminación y puede llevar a los más valientes tanto a la gloria como a la derrota. Para ello tendrán que poner antes a prueba su talento en cada round y darlo todo para llegar a vencer.

Como en toda batalla, hay reglas, pero a grandes rasgos funciona mas o menos así: un grupo de 16 talentosos ilustradores son seleccionados. Ellos se enfrentarán uno a uno en un round ilustrando un tema preestablecido. Después de ágiles movimientos con las manos y dominar acrobáticamente el lápiz, cada uno presenta su ilustración final al público, quien tiene la función de jurado dando su voto y, finalmente, otorgando la victoria a solo un participante. La eliminatoria continua así con cada una de las parejas hasta llegar a la final, donde el ganador absoluto es coronado.

Si crees ser suficientemente valiente y tenerlo todo, entonces tú mismo puedes aplicar para participar en la batalla y tener la oportunidad de luchar por la victoria.

Es importante destacar que detrás de este proyecto está una grande guerrera y un gran guerrero: Caro Zanoria y Gabo Mr. Lemonade, pues en mantenerlo vivo es donde se encuentra la batalla más grande. La idea me pareció no simplemente genial, sino una gran manera de convocar a la comunidad para hacer algo juntos, no solo en la participación activa dentro de las batallas, sino también el gran valor que agrega el espectador al proyecto.

He contactado al equipo de IFC para hacerles algunas preguntas que me tenían intrigado y así poder escribir sobre ellos. Sin embargo las respuestas ponían en evidencia la autentica pasión y el amor por IFC, las cuales se puede leer entre líneas. Así que he decidido dejar el formato de entrevista, para que también puedas sentir esta pasión, además de que la aportación ha sido muy valiosa y sería una lástima dejar algo fuera.

¿Cómo es que surgió la idea de Illustration Fight Club?

La idea del IFC no es una idea original mía (Caro) o de Gabo. El concepto lo creo Add de Colectivo Tecolote hace un par de años. Hacía batallas esporádicas en vivo en la CDMX (Ciudad de México) y también por medio de Instagram con ilustradores más reconocidos. De hecho, en una ocasión peleó (Gabo) Mr. Lemonade VS Jony Tentáculos a través de redes y en vivo en la CDMX: Mr. Lemonade VS Chocotoy. Fue justo en esa visita en la que hablamos con Add y le comentamos todo lo que podría hacer con el proyecto. Por causa de mucha chamba (mucho trabajo), Add nos cedió su proyecto para darle forma y ponerlo una vez más en marcha.

Ahí fue cuando nosotros trabajamos el concepto, invitamos a los ilustradores y organizamos todo…

¿Cuál es la misión de Illustration Fight Club?

Primero, que ilustradores, profesionales o no, puedan mostrar su trabajo, ya que creemos que existe mucho talento y mucho de éste aún no es conocido.

Por medio de nuestras batallas principales, animamos a las demás personas a participar con el mismo tema de batalla. Así muestran su trabajo y armamos una comunidad más grande y con espacios para mas personas.

Sin duda es un proyecto que está teniendo un impacto dentro de la comunidad creativa de habla hispana. ¿Cuál ha sido la experiencia respecto a la respuesta de ésta comunidad hasta ahora? ¿Cuál ha sido a su parecer el mayor aporte del proyecto?

Pues la respuesta fue, por mucho, mejor de la esperada. Cuando iniciamos el proyecto que se transmitió por completo a través de Instagram, IFC solo tenía cuatrocientos seguidores. ¡Ahora sumamos más de siete mil quinientos y contando!

En el proyecto no hemos invertido un solo peso y no ganamos absolutamente nada, únicamente más amigos. Nos encantó que los dieciséis ilustradores principales aceptaran sin tener ni una idea del proyecto y sin nada a cambio, además de que más gente se interesará y muchos de ellos se animarán a participaran.

Gracias al feedback de algunos ilustradores ( de todos: los dieciséis participantes y algunos del público ), varios de ellos han conseguido trabajos adicionales, les han escrito de sitios para entrevistas, para qué muestren su chamba y todo eso es algo que nos da mucho gusto.

¿Cómo puede apoyar la comunidad creativa a que Illustration Fight Club continue?

Por ahora esta primera etapa no se ha dado por terminada, aunque ya tenemos a los ganadores. Debido a la contingencia tuvimos que cancelar la final, la cual se llevaría a cabo en vivo en la CDMX. Aún está pendiente la reunión de todos, a la cual todos están invitados cuando tengamos fecha , y ahí haremos la entrega de sus premios, ya que hubo patrocinadores que se sumaron al proyecto y eso también nos pone felices.

Mientras eso sucede, estaremos realizando eventualmente algunas dinámicas en Instagram. ¡Así que estén pendientes!Y después ya viene la segunda edición. ¡Sigan la cuenta y chequen el sitio!

Tenemos muchas ideas. Queremos que regresen las batallas en vivo y que puedan retar a un ilustrador ya reconocido. ¡Uff, las ideas no paran! Pero todo va con tiempo, mucho trabajo y planeación.
