Javi tells us about his love for art, how his passions converge in illustration, and his development as an artist, among some other interesting facts.

Hi, Javi! Could you tell us a little about who you are and what do you do?

My first name is Javier, although almost everyone calls me Javi. In the virtual world, I am known as "Jamalamaja." I was born and have lived my whole life in Madrid, a city that I love madly. Still, my entire family is from Talavera de la Reina, a town I feel very close to. I have always been a bit from both places, and neither in particular. I think that feeling of not belonging to any site has conditioned who I am. I am an architect, but today I dedicate myself to illustration and to teach at a university.

Anyone who knows a little about your story knows you have not always dedicated yourself to illustration. Still, you have always had a great interest in art. Could you briefly tell us a bit about this? What was the trigger that led you to the path you are on now?

I have always liked drawing and the art world a lot. Still, I studied Architecture, which is something that I am passionate about. As a child, I was very imaginative, and I have always liked to create new worlds and stories, and architecture allows me to make them come true. As I say, I have always been drawn for pleasure. During my career, I decided to open a blog to collect those drawings that I did, which had nothing to do with buildings and cities. Little by little, people became more and more interested in that part of my work. It organically grew until I decided to give my work as an illustrator a chance after working in various studios as an architect.

Let's talk a bit about your style and the themes in your work. What is the inspiration behind the motives in your illustrations? Which, by the way, seems to have remained a constant in the evolution of your style. Would you say there is a bit of autobiographical content?

I am convinced that my work is autobiographical, although I am often not aware of it. I can't tell you what inspires me because I can draw inspiration from anywhere: music, architecture, photography, some personal experience… What I do always try is to tell a story with my work. I try that each of my drawings has its own story behind it, its why, and a message I want to express. I also get carried away by instinct, by "guts feeling," to draw without overthinking. That is why many times when I finish a job, I find that it talks about something I did not realize while I was doing it. I know it seems contradictory, but for me, it makes all the sense in the world ...

Your color palette is without a doubt a constant and a particular element of your work. Is there a story behind it that you would like to share with us?

During my studies, the use of color was minimal. I always used to work with grayscales and some brushstrokes of color, but always in a very controlled way. For me, the use of color is an act of total freedom. It's letting go of everything that I have inside without pretension beyond enjoying and doing something just because I like it that way. With time I have indeed created my own symbolism of color, and I associate blue, for example, with skin. On the other side, I usually associate pink with loneliness or sadness. In general, the use of specific tones comes simply from personal taste. There is no further explanation. In fact, if you look at my work chronologically, you can see in which stages of my life I felt more comfortable with some colors or others.

Now let's talk a bit about the creative scene. Do you consider it essential to have the feeling of belonging to a creative community? Do you feel that the community has played a significant role in developing your projects and creative career? If so, how?

In my case, it is not so much the need to feel within a creative community. For me, it is vital to be in contact with the people who can contribute to me. I am an amicable person. I really like to talk and interact with others. I believe that making ties with other people who are dedicated to creativity is very healthy. In my case, I have grown a lot, either personally and professionally. All these thanks to the people I have known these years due to my work.

Of course, there are many more things we would like to know about you and your work. Anything else you would like to share?

Well, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who, at some point, have identified themselves with my work and have given me their love and support. My work has always been considered as something very personal and visceral, so much so that sometimes I feel shy showing it. When I see that people find my work speaking to them, it is like being less alone in the world. It's something incredible! I would also like to say that whether you are in the art world or in any other field, the goal in life should always be to try to be the best version of yourself.

JAMALAMAJA – Seduciendo a la mirada

Azules, rosas y tonos suaves contenidos en firmes trazos dan vida a un mundo habitado por “sutiles pasiones” en las ilustraciones de Jamalamaja. Con la con la recurrente representación de escenas en exquisitos espacios, su obra cautiva e invita a la inmersión en ella desde la primera mirada. ¡Seducción gráfica pura!

Javi nos habla acerca de su amor por el arte, cómo es que sus pasiones convergen en la ilustración y su desarrollo como artista entre algunas cosas interesantes más.

Hola Javi, ¿Podrías contarnos un poco de quién eres y a qué te dedicas?

Soy Javier, aunque casi todo el mundo me llama Javi y en el mundo virtual se me conoce como “Jamalamaja”. Nací y he vivido toda la vida en Madrid, una ciudad que amo con locura, pero toda mi familia es de Talavera de la Reina, ciudad a la que me siento muy unido. Siempre he sido un poco de los dos sitios y de ninguno en concreto. Creo que ese sentimiento de no pertenencia a ningún lugar ha condicionado quien soy. Soy arquitecto, pero hoy en día me dedico a la ilustración y a dar clases en una universidad.

Quien conoce un poco de tu historia sabrá que no siempre te has dedicado a la ilustración, pero que sí que has tenido una gran interés por el arte. ¿Podrías contarnos brevemente un poco de esta historia? ¿Cuál fue el detonador que te llevó al camino en el que estás ahora?

Desde siempre me ha gustado mucho dibujar y el mundo del arte, pero estudié Arquitectura, que es algo que me apasiona. De niño era muy imaginativo y siempre me ha gustado crear nuevos mundos e historias y la arquitectura me permite hacerlos realidad. Como digo, siempre he dibujado por placer y durante la carrera decidí abrir un blog para ir recopilando esos dibujos que hacía, que nada tenían que ver con edificios y ciudades. Poco a poco la gente se fue interesando cada vez más en esa parte de mi trabajo y creció de manera natural hasta que, después de trabajar en varios estudios como arquitecto, decidí darle una oportunidad a mi faceta de ilustrador.

Hablemos un poco de tu estilo y de los motivos en tu trabajo. ¿Cuál es la inspiración detrás de la temática en tus ilustraciones? La cual, por cierto, parece haberse mantenido constante a pesar de la evolución de tu estilo. ¿Dirías que hay un poco de contenido autobiográfico?

Estoy convencido de que mi obra tiene carácter autobiográfico, aunque muchas veces no soy consciente de ello. No te puedo decir qué me inspira porque puedo sacar inspiración de cualquier lugar: música, arquitectura, fotografía, alguna vivencia personal… Lo que sí que procuro siempre, es contar algo con mi trabajo. Intento que cada uno de mis dibujos tenga su propia historia detrás, su por qué y un mensaje que yo quiera contar. También es cierto que me dejo llevar mucho por el instinto, por “las tripas”, dibujar sin pensar demasiado. Por eso, muchas veces, al terminar un trabajo, me doy cuenta de que habla de cosas de las que no me estaba dando cuenta mientras lo hacía. Sé que parece contradictorio, pero para mi tiene todo el sentido del mundo…

Tu paleta de colores es sin duda un elemento constante y característico de tu trabajo. ¿Hay alguna historia detrás de ella que quisieras compartirnos?

Durante la carrera, el uso del color era muy limitado. Siempre solía trabajar con escalas de grises y alguna pincelada de color, pero siempre de manera muy controlada. Para mí, el uso del color es un acto de total libertad, de poder soltar todo lo que llevo dentro sin ninguna pretensión más allá de disfrutar y de hacer algo sólo porque me gusta así. Es cierto que con el paso del tiempo he creado mi propia simbología del color y asocio el azul, por ejemplo, con la piel o el rosa lo suelo relacionar con la soledad o la tristeza. Por lo general el uso de unos tonos en concreto viene simplemente del gusto personal. No tiene mayor explicación… De hecho si ves mi trabajo de manera cronológica, puedes ver en qué etapas de mi vida me sentía más cómodo con unos colores u otros.

Ahora hablemos un poco de la escena creativa. ¿Consideras importante tener el sentimiento de pertenecer a una comunidad creativa? ¿Sientes que la comunidad ha jugado un papel importante en el desarrollo de tus proyectos y carrera creativa? Si es así, ¿De qué manera?

En mi caso no es tanto la necesidad de sentirme dentro de una comunidad creativa, si no de estar en contacto con la gente que me puede aportar. Soy una persona bastante sociable, me gusta mucho hablar y relacionarme con los demás. Creo que hacer lazos con otras personas que se dedican al mundo de la creatividad es algo muy sano y en mi caso necesario, ya que he crecido mucho personal y profesionalmente gracias a la gente que he conocido estos años debido a mi trabajo.

Por supuesto que hay muchas más cosas que nos gustaría saber sobre ti y tu trabajo. ¿Alguna cosa más que quisieras compartir?

Pues me gustaría aprovechar para dar las gracias a todas aquellas personas que en algún momento se han sentido identificadas con mi trabajo y me han dado su cariño y apoyo. Mi trabajo siempre lo he considerado algo muy personal y visceral, tanto que a veces me siento tímido mostrándolo. Por eso, cuando veo que hay gente que siente que mi trabajo habla de sus vidas, es cómo estar menos solo en el mundo. ¡Es algo increíble! También me gustaría decir que tanto si te dedicas al mundo del arte o a cualquier otro ámbito, el objetivo en la vida siempre debería ser intentar ser la mejor versión de uno mismo.
