VISTAENPLANTA is a project directed by Mónica García, who is a Mexican architect and illustrator. Her gift is listening to spaces and giving them life through architectural graphic representation with an exceptional touch. Through the language of colors and lines, she tells the history of buildings, exteriors, and other architectural projects, capturing her essence in colorful illustrations.

For Monica, her creative passion was more significant than her fears, and she has shown it by growing this project. Her work is based on her professional training, but with a purely creative approach and always opting for a creativity party in which contours and pastel tones are the hosts.

The celebration is always open to the public; through her Instagram account, she frequently shares advice and information about her workshops. She occasionally reveals secrets and curious aspects about what is behind her works. Hello, Monica! Could you tell us a bit about yourself and what you do?

Hello! I studied architecture in Hidalgo, Mexico. After five years of graduation, I decided to undertake an architectural illustration project, which later became a self-managed project. I give workshops to teach my drawing method and, in this way, create a community to learn and motivate.

I know how difficult it is to find the perfect balance between architecture's technical and creative aspects. What has been your strategy for dealing with finding this balance? Do you think you found it?

It is challenging to find balance. My balance leans more towards the creative, and that is reflected in my work. That's how the idea of doing something more artistic came up, something that I could mix with architecture because I honestly lost interest in the career. As I was progressing in my studies, the semesters became more technical. At work, the interest returned, but there was still avoid. I felt like I wasn't doing what I was really passionate about.

Tell us a little about VISTAENPLANTA! How did you decide to start this project based on architectural illustration?

Everything arose from my concern to do my own project but based on what I really liked.

I have been drawing since I was a child. Since then, I was interested in getting into the artistic world, although it was because of the insecurity that I decided on architecture and not plastic arts. I do not regret having studied architecture, but I never stopped drawing.

It was precisely in my last job when I started losing myself because I was no longer doing anything that I liked. The drawing was still very latent, so I decided to do something for myself and the long term.

I knew it would be risky to start a new project from scratch and without resources, but, on the other hand, I had time and disposition. Never before have I been so excited to do something of my own.

For three years, I kept imagining what it might be like to work on something related to illustration. Still, on the other hand, I knew architecture was the path I had chosen. I knew it would be crazy, but at the same time, I was uncertain about whether it would ever work or not. That was how I put my fears aside, and the only thing that mattered to me was doing what I had wanted for a long time. All my energy and time was and has been since then for vistaenplanta.

This is more than an entrepreneurial project or my source of income. It's how I can be myself, and for me, that is the most outstanding achievement I have ever had.

In your illustrations, it is possible to see, you have managed to find your artistic voice, which gives life to the spaces you represent. How do you choose the scene that provides each illustration with context? Do you have a process for selecting the color palette?

It is not enough to see the spaces from how they are designed or built. I want to tell you a story that takes place in that space. That is the starting point. Most of the illustrations speak of my personal experiences, tastes, and how I would like others to see architecture. From there, I decide the type of character that I want to draw, the emotions that I want to convey, and, of course, the color palette. I just imagine how I would like the scene to be appreciated, and this is closely related to my state of mind. I am a big dreamer and spend my time imagining scenarios. Hence the ease I have for drawing.

I have noticed that you have taken a step further and are making VISTAENPLANTA a project to share your passion and processes. Would you like to share a bit about this platform, the stage it is in, and your vision for it?

At first, I did not dare to give workshops. I was scared to share my method, not out of jealousy, but because I opened myself up to people I didn't know. Later I understood that they only wanted to learn from me, and I began to design a learning method that was easy and dynamic. Until now, the workshops have been face-to-face, occasionally virtual, but I am already working on making them available online. This would help a lot in terms of time because most of the participants work or study.

I hope to have everything assembled by 2021 and continue to grow with the project!

Could you share with us what has been the most significant satisfaction your work has given you so far?

The utmost satisfaction is that I can be myself since it is a project where I can develop both personally and artistically.

The second is to have direct contact with people and that they feel identified with me, since, in some way, I am impacting and contributing positively in their lives. That's everything to me! My project is about growing. If I grow up, so do you! I invite you to achieve what you set out to do, no matter what it is. I do this by demonstrating it with my project as an example.

The third satisfaction is that I have the time in my favor and that now I can mold it according to my needs. I used to suffer when dependent on a continuous twelve-hour work schedule, which is not suitable for the soul. I love being free and having the time at my disposal. This has also been a great satisfaction.

Of course, there are many more things we would like to know about you and your work. Anything else you would like to share?

Be true to yourself! Fear forces us to miss a world of possibilities. Still, if you manage to overcome it, you will develop yourself in the area you want. The only thing stopping you is yourself!

vistaenplanta es un proyecto dirigido por Mónica García, quien es una ilustradora y arquitecta mexicana. Su don es escuchar a los espacios y darles vida a través de la representación gráfica arquitectónica con un toque muy especial. Ella cuenta, a través del lenguaje de colores y trazos, la historia de edificios, exteriores y otros proyectos arquitectónicos, plasmando su esencia en coloridas ilustraciones.

Para Mónica fue más grande su pasión creativa que sus miedos, y lo ha demostrado con este proyecto creciente. Su trabajo tiene como base su formación profesional, pero con un enfoque meramente creativo y siempre optando por una fiesta de creatividad en la que contornos y tonos pastel son los anfitriones.

¡Hola, Mónica! ¿Podrías contarnos un poco acerca de ti y qué es lo que haces?

¡Hola! Yo estudié arquitectura en Hidalgo, México. Después de cinco años de haber egresado, decidí emprender un proyecto de ilustración arquitectónica, el cual más tarde se convirtió en un proyecto autogestionado. Imparto talleres para enseñar mi método de dibujo y de esta forma crear una comunidad para aprender y motivar.

Sé lo difícil que es encontrar el balance perfecto entre el mundo técnico y creativo en la arquitectura. ¿Cuál ha sido tu camino rumbo a este equilibrio? ¿Consideras haber encontrado el balance?

Es difícil encontrar el equilibrio. Mi balanza se inclina más hacia lo creativo y eso se refleja en mi trabajo. Fue así que surgió la idea de hacer algo de carácter más artístico y que pudiera mezclarlo con la arquitectura, porque sinceramente perdí el interés en la carrera. Conforme se avanza en el estudio, los semestres se van volviendo más técnicos. En el plano laboral volvió el interés, pero aun permanecía con un vacío. Sentía que no estaba haciendo lo que realmente me apasionaba.

¡Cuéntanos un poco acerca de vistaenplanta! ¿Cómo es que surgió tu inquietud por iniciar este proyecto y por la ilustración arquitectónica?

Todo surgió por mi inquietud de hacer un proyecto propio, pero basado en lo que realmente me gustaba.

Dibujo desde que era niña, desde entonces tenía interés por adentrarme en el plano artístico, aunque fue por mi inseguridad que me decidí por la arquitectura y no por las artes plásticas. No me arrepiento de haber estudiado arquitectura, pero nunca solté el dibujo.

Precisamente fue en el último trabajo en el que estuve cuando me estaba perdiendo a mi misma, porque ya no estaba haciendo nada de lo que me gustaba. El dibujo seguía muy latente, así que decidí hacer algo por mí y definitivamente.

Sabía que sería arriesgado empezar un proyecto nuevo de la nada y sin recursos, pero, por otro lado, teniendo todo el tiempo y la disposición. Nunca antes me había sentido tan emocionada por hacer algo mío.

Ya llevaba tres años imaginado cómo podría ser trabajar en algo relacionado a la ilustración, pero por otro lado ése, la arquitectura, era el camino que había elegido. Sabía que sería una locura, pero al mismo tiempo me causaba incertidumbre la idea de que llegara a funcionar. Fue así como hice mis miedos a un lado y lo único que me importaba era hacer aquello que quería ya desde hace mucho tiempo. Toda mi energía y tiempo fue y ha sido desde entonces para vistaenplanta.

No solo es un proyecto de emprendimiento o mi fuente de ingreso. Es la manera en que puedo ser yo misma, y para mí ese es el mayor logro que he tenido.

En tus ilustraciones es posible percibir que has logrado encontrar una voz artística que da vida a los espacios que representas. ¿Cómo es que decides la escena que pone tus ilustraciones dentro de un contexto? ¿Tienes algún proceso para la selección de la paleta de colores?

Para mí no es suficiente ver los espacios desde como están diseñados o construidos, sino en cómo quiero contarte una historia que se desarrolla en el espacio. Ése es el punto de partida. La mayoría de las ilustraciones hablan de mis vivencias personales, mis gustos y la manera en cómo es que me gustaría que otros viesen a la arquitectura. Es de ahí deriva el tipo de personaje que quiero dibujar, las emociones que quiero transmitir y, por supuesto, la paleta de colores. Solo imagino cómo me gustaría que la escena se pudiese apreciar y esto está muy relacionado a mi estado de ánimo. Soy muy soñadora y me la paso imaginando escenarios. De ahí la facilidad que tengo por dibujar.

He notado que has dado un paso más allá y estás haciendo de vistaenplanta un proyecto para compartir tu pasión y tus procesos. ¿Te gustaría compartir un poco acerca de esta plataforma, la etapa en la que se encuentra y tu visión para ella?

Al principio no me atreví a dar talleres. Me daba miedo compartir mi método, no por celosa, sino porque me estaba abriéndome yo misma ante personas que no conocía. Después entendí que ellos solo querían aprender de mí y comencé a diseñar un método de aprendizaje que fuera fácil y dinámico. Los talleres han sido hasta ahora presenciales y virtuales, pero ya estoy trabajando en que puedan ser tomados online. Esto ayudaría bastante en cuanto a tiempos, porque la mayoría de los participantes trabaja o estudia.

¡Espero tener todo montado para 2021 y continuar creciendo con el proyecto!

¿Podrías compartirnos cuál o cuáles han sido las mayores satisfacciones que te ha dado hasta ahora tu trabajo?

La principal satisfacción es que puedo ser yo misma, ya que es un proyecto donde puedo desarrollarme tanto personal y como artísticamente.

La segunda es tener contacto directo con las personas y que ellas se sientan identificados conmigo, ya que de alguna manera estoy repercutiendo y aportando positivamente en sus vidas. ¡Eso lo es todo para mí!. En mi proyecto se trata de crecer. ¡Si yo crezco, tú también! Les hago una invitación a que puedan lograr lo que se proponen sin importar lo que sea. Esto lo hago demostrandolo con mi proyecto como ejemplo.

La tercera satisfacción es que tengo el tiempo a mi favor y que ahora puedo moldearlo de acuerdo a mis necesidades. Antes sufría cuando dependía de un horario laboral de doce horas continuas y eso no es bueno para el alma. Amo ser libre y tener el tiempo a mi disposición. Esto también ha sido una gran satisfacción.

Por supuesto que hay muchas más cosas que nos gustaría saber sobre ti y tu trabajo. ¿Alguna cosa más que quisieras compartir?

¡Qué sean fieles a sí mismos! El miedo hace que nos perdamos un mundo de posibilidades, pero si logras superarlo podrás desarrollarte en el ámbito que tú quieras. ¡Lo único que te detiene eres tú mismo!
